Why this matters
Knowing your Windows version helps when following instructions, getting support or checking whether your computer still receives security updates. Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025, so devices still running it no longer receive regular security updates.
What you'll need
- Your Windows computer
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Use the quick method
Press the Windows key + R, type "winver" and press Enter. A window shows your Windows version and build number.
Step 2
Check full details in Settings
Go to Settings, System, About. Under "Windows specifications" you will see the Edition (for example Windows 11 Pro), Version (for example 24H2) and OS build.
Step 3
Check your device specifications
On the same page, "Device specifications" shows your processor, installed RAM and whether the system is 64-bit.
Step 4
Confirm it is supported
Compare your version with Microsoft’s Windows release information page. If you are on Windows 10 or an old Windows 11 version, plan an upgrade.
Summary
A quick "winver" tells you where you stand. Unsupported versions should be upgraded to keep receiving security fixes.
