Why this matters
The Essential Eight "Regular backups" strategy is about more than having backups: they must be performed regularly, retained, protected from tampering and tested by actually restoring from them.
What you'll need
- A list of important data, software and configuration
- A backup solution
- Admin access
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Identify what to back up
Include important data, software and configuration settings, not just files. Remember Microsoft 365 email and SharePoint.
Step 2
Set the schedule
Back up in line with business needs, typically daily for important data.
Step 3
Keep backups separate and protected
Store backups so they cannot be modified or deleted by normal user accounts. Use immutable or offline storage where possible.
Step 4
Restrict access to backups
Only authorised backup administrators should be able to access, change or delete backups.
Step 5
Test restores
Restore data, applications and settings as part of a disaster recovery exercise at least annually, and spot-check more often.
Step 6
Record results
Keep a simple log of backup checks and restore tests as evidence for assessments and insurers.
Summary
Regular, protected and tested backups make sure that, whatever happens, your business can recover.
