Why this matters
A full drive slows Windows down, stops updates installing and can cause apps to crash. Windows includes tools that safely remove temporary and unneeded files.
What you'll need
- Your Windows computer
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
See what is using space
Go to Settings, System, Storage. Windows shows how much space each category uses.
Step 2
Use Cleanup recommendations
Select "Cleanup recommendations" to review temporary files, large or unused files and unused apps, then remove what you do not need.
Step 3
Turn on Storage Sense
On the Storage page, turn on Storage Sense to automatically clear temporary files and empty the Recycle Bin on a schedule.
Step 4
Use OneDrive Files On-Demand
Right-click large OneDrive folders and choose "Free up space". Files stay visible and download when you open them.
Step 5
Uninstall unused apps
Go to Settings, Apps, Installed apps. Sort by size and uninstall anything you no longer use.
Step 6
Check your Downloads folder
Downloads often contains old installers and duplicate files. Move what you need and delete the rest.
Summary
Regular cleanup and Storage Sense keep your drive healthy. If you are always short of space, a larger SSD may be worth it.
