Why this matters
Forgotten passwords are one of the most common IT requests. Microsoft 365 lets users reset their own password if self-service reset is enabled, and administrators can reset passwords for staff in a few clicks.
What you'll need
- Your work email address
- Your registered phone or authenticator app
- For admins: Microsoft 365 admin access
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Users: start the reset
Go to passwordreset.microsoftonline.com (or select "Forgot my password" on the sign-in page) and enter your work email.
Step 2
Users: verify your identity
Confirm with your registered method, such as an Authenticator notification or a code sent to your phone.
Step 3
Users: choose a new passphrase
Enter a new, unique passphrase of at least 14 characters. Sign in again on your phone and other devices with the new password.
Step 4
Admins: open Active users
Sign in to admin.microsoft.com, go to Users, then Active users, and select the person.
Step 5
Admins: reset the password
Select "Reset password". Choose whether to auto-generate a password and tick "Require this user to change their password when they first sign in".
Step 6
Admins: share the temporary password securely
Give the temporary password to the user by phone or in person, not by email to the locked mailbox.
Troubleshooting
The reset page says I cannot reset my own password
Self-service password reset is not enabled for your account, or you have not registered verification methods. Contact your IT administrator.
Summary
Self-service reset saves time for staff and IT. If it is not enabled, your administrator can turn it on in the Microsoft Entra admin center.
