Why this matters
MFA (also called two-step verification or 2FA) means that even if someone learns your password, they still cannot get into your account without your phone. It is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself online.
What you'll need
- Your smartphone
- An authenticator app (Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator)
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Start with your email
For Gmail, go to myaccount.google.com, Security, 2-Step Verification. For Outlook.com, go to account.microsoft.com, Security, Advanced security options.
Step 2
Follow the prompts
Choose to use an authenticator app or Google/Microsoft prompts on your phone where offered. SMS works too, but an app is safer.
Step 3
Save backup codes
Write down or print the backup codes and keep them somewhere safe at home.
Step 4
Add MFA to social media
Facebook and Instagram: Settings, Accounts Centre, Password and security, Two-factor authentication.
Step 5
Check your banking app
Most Australian banks offer app-based approvals or security codes. Make sure these are turned on in your banking app’s security settings.
Summary
Turning on MFA for your email, social media and banking takes a few minutes and blocks most account takeovers.
