Why this matters
Wi-Fi problems are frustrating but usually have a simple cause. Working from the simplest fix to the more involved ones narrows the problem quickly.
What you'll need
- The affected device
- Access to your modem/router
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Check whether it is one device or all
If only one device has trouble, the problem is likely that device. If everything is affected, focus on the router or internet service.
Step 2
Restart the device and the router
Restart your computer. Then turn off the modem/router at the wall, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on. Allow a few minutes for it to reconnect.
Step 3
Check for an outage
Check your internet provider’s outage page or app, or the NBN Co website.
Step 4
Forget and rejoin the network
On Windows, go to Settings, Network & internet, Wi-Fi, Manage known networks, select the network and choose "Forget". Reconnect with the password.
Step 5
Move closer and reduce interference
Walls, microwaves and distance weaken Wi-Fi. Test near the router. If it works there, consider a mesh system or access point.
Step 6
Run the network troubleshooter
On Windows, go to Settings, System, Troubleshoot, Other troubleshooters and run "Network and Internet".
Step 7
Reset network settings
As a last step on Windows, go to Settings, Network & internet, Advanced network settings, Network reset.
Summary
Most Wi-Fi issues are fixed by a restart, rejoining the network or improving coverage. Persistent dropouts across devices may need a router upgrade.
