QR Code Scams
MediumScams
Also known as: Quishing, QR phishing
Malicious QR codes that send people to fake login or payment pages, bypassing many email filters.
What it is
QR code scams, sometimes called "quishing", use QR codes to direct victims to malicious websites. Because the destination is hidden inside an image, these codes often slip past email security filters and exploit the trust people place in scanning a code with their phone. They appear in emails, letters, posters, parking meters and fake stickers placed over legitimate codes.
How it works
- 1
A QR code is placed in a phishing email, a physical sticker over a real code, or an official-looking notice.
- 2
The victim scans it with their phone, which feels routine and safe.
- 3
The code opens a convincing fake login, payment or app-install page.
- 4
The victim enters credentials or card details, or installs a malicious app.
- 5
Because the action happens on a personal phone, it often bypasses corporate security controls entirely.
Warning signs
- QR codes in unexpected emails, especially "scan to verify your account"
- Physical QR stickers that look added-on or misaligned over an existing code
- A scanned link that asks you to log in or pay on an unfamiliar domain
- Prompts to install an app from outside the official app stores
Business impact
- Stolen credentials and account takeover
- Fraudulent payments from personal or business cards
- Malware installed on mobile devices used for work
- A route around email and network security controls
How to defend against it
Check the URL before acting
After scanning, read the full web address. If it is not the site you expected, close it and do not log in.
Be sceptical of QR login requests
Legitimate services rarely ask you to log in by scanning a code from an email. Navigate to the site directly instead.
Use MFA and a password manager
A password manager will not autofill on a fake domain, and MFA limits the damage if credentials are captured.
Raise staff awareness
Include quishing in security awareness training so staff treat QR codes with the same caution as links.
