Why this matters
Microsoft Authenticator is the app Microsoft 365 uses to confirm it is really you signing in. It is more secure than SMS codes and makes signing in faster once it is set up.
What you'll need
- iPhone or Android phone
- Your Microsoft 365 email and password
- A computer
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Download the app
Install Microsoft Authenticator from the App Store or Google Play, then open it and allow notifications.
Step 2
Start registration on your computer
Go to mysignins.microsoft.com, open "Security info" and choose "Add sign-in method" then "Microsoft Authenticator".
Step 3
Add a work or school account in the app
In the app, tap +, choose "Work or school account" and select "Scan a QR code".
Step 4
Scan the QR code
Scan the code shown on your computer. Your account will appear in the app.
Step 5
Complete the number-matching test
Your computer will show a two-digit number. Type that number into the app notification to approve.
Step 6
Turn on backup
In the app settings, turn on Cloud backup (iCloud on iPhone, your Microsoft personal account on Android) so you can restore accounts on a new phone.
